By the students, for the students.
Mission
The mission of the Magenta Journal is to provide fair, accurate, and impactful journalism to inform and tell the stories of the students and alumni of Muskingum University. Through interdisciplinary student collaboration and independent reporting, we seek to elevate all voices of the campus community through engaging writing and multimedia storytelling.
The beginning
The first issue of the Black & Magenta, Muskingum University’s long-standing student newspaper, was published in 1902.
For more than a century, the newspaper served as a platform for independent student journalism, reporting on everything from student affairs and campus arts and events, to national politics and global wars.
With changing times and advancements in technology, the format of the newspaper has changed into a multimedia storytelling platform, but the values of independency, accuracy, integrity and student empowerment through writing remain the same.
Our writers report on issues near and dear to students and alumni, deliving into human-interest stories that focus on the “why” and “who” of contemporary issues and events impacting our campus community.
The Magenta Journal seeks to serve and inform current and past Muskies. Our stories are written by and for the students and we seek to elevate the stories of all members of our campus community.
